Flotsam – Art as Environmental Activism


Surrey Artist and award-winning local photographer Jen Hough launched her series "Flotsam", a solo art exhibition at The White Rock Community Centre-Gallery which on August 16th, 2018. Jen Hough is a self-taught photographer who is known for her black and white and urban photography. The "Art on Display" City of White Rock selected Hough's work for exhibiting. The show is on display until September 21st.

Jen has been an artist in Surrey since 2012 and in Washington State for 22 years. Regarding this art show, Hough stated “I am very excited to be chosen and also gratified that “Art on Display” City of White Rock chose me for this, my first solo show. I was very honored that they chose my idea for the “Flotsam” show as it has been a close to 10-year study I have been doing on the impact of plastics and garbage in our oceans and on our coasts. It is nice to be recognized locally in the community for my work.”

Self-taught her artwork is represented in the personal collections of people in Canada as well as the United States. Her work has also been exhibited as part of the See Me 5th Annual international Exposure Award show the Black and White exhibit in the Louvre Art museum in Paris France in July of 2015. It was also published in a book in 2015 “The Black and White Collection”.

Jen has shown her work locally in the Semiahmoo Arts Society Double exposure Photography shows in 2017 and 2018 and will also be showing at the South Surrey Recreation & Arts Center as part of Double Exposure 2018 ENCORE Exhibition in the Corridor Galleria Oct 25-Nov. 21.
